Monnidesi (mah-nih-deh-see)
Scort Muggins, Human year 3251:
I’m still rather confused about my experience on Monnidesi. When I entered the atmosphere, everything changed. My body and the spaceship became infinitely stretched out from side to side. My vision became a horizontal gradient of colors (See Figure 12.1), and I could only see what was right in front of me. I tried to land, but it was dicey because I was just moving toward a green part of the gradient in front of me, which I assumed to be a field of some sort. I could’ve easily crashed, but I knew that I was an incredible pilot so it would be no problem. I wouldn’t recommend landing on Monnidesi without the proper flight skills.
I got out of my ship, but not through the normal exit. I used the ejection protocol to open the windshield. That seemed to be the only way out of my ship on this planet because I wasn’t able to move from side to side. It was starting to become clear that I had somehow shifted into another dimension, but this wasn’t anything rad like the fourth, fifth, or eighth dimension (my favorite). I wasn’t flowing through time and space; I wasn’t even in the z axis. I had found a planet that was stuck in the second dimension. I could only imagine what was in front of me. (See Figure 12.2)
I walked from my spaceship, but couldn’t make anything out other than different shades of color. A black part of my gradient vision grew in length, and I assumed it was something walking toward me. I hoped it was a friendly Monnidesish being walking toward me, and I wasn’t actually about to be swallowed in blackness. The black part of my vision stopped in front of me and started talking to me. Somehow, there were still living things on this planet, and in fact, intelligent life.
“Wow, it seems like your planet is in the second dimension,” I said.
“What’s a dimension?” the Monnidesish replied.
I tried explaining the third dimension to the being and it couldn’t understand the concept, so I guess they weren’t that intelligent.
The whole experience was like I had taken some unregulated psychedelics and couldn’t find my way out of the bad trip. I wasn’t a one or two dimensional character. I was Scort: a complex, three dimensional character with likes, dislikes, emotions, incredible talents, and very few flaws.
Before I entered the planet, it still appeared as a sphere so I wondered what exactly was happening physics-wise. I didn’t ask the Monnidesish being because I knew I’d just get it confused. I envisioned a world in which one’s body, and everything on the planet, actually existed around the entire planet. Essentially, my body was an equator line around the three dimensional planet, but I could only experience myself and my surroundings in two dimensions. (See Figure 12.3)
My time on Monnidesi was really freaking me out, and I wasn’t having a chill time. I didn’t want to get lost and lose my ship because I was only able to look at a gradient of colors. I backed away from the Monnidesish being while it was still talking to me. Sure, it was rude, but I needed to get out of there before I really started panicking. At least I could only walk backwards in one direction. I would eventually run into my ship.
